Effective Leadership / Effective Security
Cybersecurity is a people problem. People problem-solve, but they need leadership to allow for it.
We all know, business culture comes from the top, there’s no one size fits all and you can’t buy it out the box, it needs to mature. In most businesses it’s up to the senior management team to set the tone and set out the parameters for what is acceptable. However, Manager, doesn’t necessarily = Leader.
I have been fortunate to study many a great leader in my time in the military – one thing that unified them all was their commitment to a simple code, the military leadership code:
- Lead by example
- Encourage thinking
- Apply reward and discipline
- Demand high performance
- Encourage confidence in the team
- Recognise individual strengths and weaknesses
- Strive for team goals
As a leader, you won’t always be the expert; communicate your intent, empower your people, listen to them and nurture them.
Cybersecurity soft skills are lacking in the workplace. Educate and look after your troops – they will, in turn, look after you.
I personally align to Vince Lombardi’s assertion that “Leaders are made, they are not born, They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile”. No truer a word said.
